Most roof claims don’t fail because of damage — they fail because of documentation, policy traps, and bad timing.
Public adjuster Ron Snouffer joins the show to explain what actually happens when claims go sideways, why insurance companies push back, and how roofers can protect themselves and their customers during the process.
If you’ve ever watched a claim fall apart, this episode explains why.
Many claims fail due to poor documentation, weak communication, and lack of understanding of the policy. Insurance carriers rely on incomplete scopes, missing photos, and unclear damage descriptions to justify lower payouts or denials. If the claim isn’t properly built from the start, it becomes much harder to recover the full amount later.
The earlier, the better. For large or complex losses, a public adjuster should be involved before or immediately after filing the claim. On residential jobs, bring one in as soon as the insurance company pushes back, partially approves, or delays. Waiting too long can limit your options or completely kill the claim.
The most common mistakes are poor documentation, bad photos, and letting the insurance adjuster control the scope. Many roofers also try to negotiate too long without results or overinflate estimates, which damages credibility. These mistakes weaken the claim and can delay or completely derail payment.
Documentation is everything. Clear photos, detailed scopes, and accurate descriptions of damage set the foundation for the entire claim. Weak or missing documentation makes it easy for the insurance company to deny or reduce the payout. Strong documentation early can lead to faster approvals and fewer disputes.
Insurance companies know that time works in their favor. The longer a claim drags out, the more likely a homeowner or contractor will give up or accept a lower payout. Delays, additional inspections, and pushback are often used to reduce what they ultimately have to pay.
A roofing contractor identifies damage and performs the work, while a public adjuster represents the property owner in the claim. The adjuster handles documentation, policy interpretation, and negotiation with the insurance company to secure proper payment. They work alongside roofers but are focused on maximizing the claim outcome.
